Why Start a Blog? These Are the Top 25 Reasons to Start Blogging Today!
Why start a blog? If you’re asking yourself that question, it tells me that you’re thinking about starting a blog, but you’re not sure if it’s worth it.
And I’m here to tell you that there are many great reasons to start blogging!
In fact, starting a blog changed my life. It had never occurred to me to start a blog before, until the summer of 2017. I had always loved to write, but I didn’t know much about blogging. I had a vague idea that there were lots of bloggers out there, and that some were even making money from it, but it seemed like something that was far out of reach for a regular college student like myself.
Then one day, during a summer internship in college that had me rethinking my life and wondering how I was supposed to make it through 40+ years in the corporate world, I started researching ways to make money online.
This time, I started to read in-depth about blogging.
I realized that it sounded like something I actually could do. I started my first blog (this one!), and I began making money from it one month later.
Then I started several other blogs, including a travel blog and a lifestyle blog. I quickly grew and monetized those blogs too, and before long, I was earning a full-time income (that eventually allowed me to quit my job and work for myself!)
Not only has blogging been a life-changing source of income for me, but it’s also been a great creative outlet and the thing I’ve stuck with the longest.
Before I found blogging, I was honestly a serial quitter. I quit or gave up on pretty much every other hobby or extracurricular activity I had tried, but something about blogging just stuck, and here I am, writing this 8.5 years later.
So why should you start a blog?
Let’s talk about the reasons to start a blog, and why you should get started now!
1. Make Money
As I just alluded to, blogging can be a great way to make money! Whether you’re just looking for a fun side hustle or you want to develop it into a full-time income, a blog is an easy, low-cost business that anyone can start.
Check out my guide to the top 5 ways to make money blogging for some ideas. And check out this list of 25 other ways to monetize a blog.

2. Have a Creative Outlet
Not interested in monetizing your blog? That’s fine too! Blogging is also a great way to start a creative hobby where you can express yourself.
And even though I do blog professionally, it’s still a major creative outlet for me!
3. Build a Personal Brand
Although it’s definitely possible to blog anonymously, you can also use your blog to develop an online presence and build your personal brand.
Establishing a strong personal brand is useful if you want to position yourself as an expert in your niche and enhance your professional reputation.

4. Get Leads for Your Business
While you can definitely make money directly from your blog, many people use their blogs as a marketing effort to get leads for a separate business.
For example, if you’re a realtor, you might have a blog about local real estate and the home-buying process to attract potential clients. This form of content marketing is extremely effective and can offer great returns.
5. Create a Portfolio of Your Work
A blog can also serve as a portfolio. I’ve done a lot of freelance writing in addition to running my own blogs, and I’ve been able to point to my blogs as a portfolio of my work numerous times to potential clients.
This made me stand out from other freelancers and always landed me the gig!

6. Become a Better Writer
Speaking of writing, are you looking to improve your writing skills? There’s no better way to do it than by consistently writing on your blog.
I’ve always loved to write, and while I don’t consider myself a “great” writer by any means, I think that blogging has helped me write more with ease. I almost never get writer’s block anymore, and I can write extremely prolifically.
7. Grow Your Email List
Blogging is a great way to grow your email list. I actually recommend that all bloggers have an email list, because it’s the best way to build an audience.
You can leverage your email list to sell products, earn money from affiliate links, get newsletter sponsorships, and drive traffic back to your blog.

8. Develop a Community
If you’re looking to develop an online community and make friends with like-minded individuals, blogging is an excellent way to do this!
You can curate your own community and participate in other communities too.
9. Position Yourself as an Expert
If you want to establish yourself as an expert in your field, blogging can help you do that. You can use your blog to back up your existing credentials and also to produce “thought leadership” content in your area of expertise.
For example, let’s say you’re a doula. You can use your blog to share expert insights on pregnancy and childbirth, and attract potential clients. This can also lead to you being interviewed or cited as an expert in online sources.

10. Learn New Technical Skills
I’ve always been pretty tech-savvy — I taught myself HTML and CSS when I was in elementary school so that I could design my own web pages on Neopets!
But starting a blog allowed me to develop a whole array of new technical skills, and I’m constantly learning more. You don’t have to be particularly “techy” to start a blog, though. It’s honestly very beginner-friendly!
11. Practice Consistency
While there’s no right answer to the question of how often you should blog, the most successful bloggers do publish new content on a regular basis.
Committing to a regular blogging cadence (whether that’s three new blog posts a week, one new blog post a week, two new blog posts a month, etc.) can help you improve your consistency, which carries over to other areas of your life.

12. Increase Your Confidence
I know that putting your thoughts and ideas out into the world through your blog can be scary and intimidating at first. You might have imposter syndrome and ask yourself, “Why would anyone ever listen to me about this?”
But the more you do it, the more you will develop confidence in your voice!
13. Sell Digital Products
Selling digital products is a great way to make money online. This can be something like an ebook, an online course, a template, and so on.
Using your blog to market your products (for example, including links to them in relevant blog posts) is an incredible way to boost your sales.

14. Unlock Unique Opportunities
Blogging can lead to all kinds of unique opportunities. For example, because of my travel blog, I was able to land a cool gig as a freelance travel writer. And as part of that role, I got invited on free press trips around the world!
Some bloggers leverage their influence to speak at conferences, and there are even many bloggers who have been able to turn their blog into a book deal!
15. Network with Industry Experts
If you want to establish yourself as a trusted figure in your niche or build a business, having a blog can be very helpful for networking with industry experts.
It helps you organically start connecting and collaborating with other creators in your niche. I’ve developed many valuable relationships this way.

16. Build Something You Control
Unlike social media platforms, where the algorithms can change on a whim, or you can even lose your account, you have total control over your blog.
No one can ever take it away from you, and you have complete creative freedom.
17. Create, Not Consume
How much time have you spent mindlessly consuming content online, scrolling TikTok or Instagram for hours? Or even binge-watching TV shows? Blogging allows you to flip the script and become a creator, not a consumer.
I can’t tell you how empowering and productive this feels. It’s so much more enjoyable to spend an hour writing a blog post than doom-scrolling social media. And it’s honestly a lot better for your mental health too.

18. Become Your Own Boss
If you’re tired of working for someone else, blogging allows you to become your own boss. I realized during my several mind-numbingly boring corporate internships in college that the typical 9-to-5 route was not for me.
Instead, I turned my blog into a full time job, and it has truly changed my life.
19. Get Media Opportunities
Your blog can open a lot of doors when it comes to media opportunities. For example, I’ve been featured in major online publications because of my blog. And many bloggers have taken it several steps further than that.
I know bloggers who are regularly interviewed as featured experts for major media outlets on television or radio, or who have been invited to host podcasts or speak at industry events. And these are all paid media gigs too!

20. Share Your Passion
A simple reason to start a blog is because it allows you to share your passion with the world. It gives you an outlet to talk about the things you love the most.
Whether it’s fashion, fitness, books, crafts, or something else, there’s a niche for everyone. Or if you have multiple passions, you can start a multi-niche blog.
21. Help Others in a Meaningful Way
One of the most rewarding things about blogging is that it allows you to help others. I’ll never forget an email I got from a stay-at-home mom letting me know that my blogging advice had allowed her to make her first $1,000 from blogging.
And on my travel blog, it feels great to know that I’ve helped someone plan their dream trip or that I’ve inspired them to travel somewhere new.

22. Advertise Your Services
If you offer services, a blog is one of the best places to advertise what you do, whether it’s coaching, freelance writing, or virtual assistant work.
Not only can you write blog posts related to the services you offer, but you can also use your blog to house past client testimonials, pricing details, and samples of your work, making it an all-in-one business hub for you.
23. Become an Influencer
I don’t really consider myself an “influencer” although I guess I technically am one. You don’t have to have hundreds of thousands of followers on TikTok or Instagram to be an influencer — bloggers can be influencers too!
This is especially true if you have a large audience on your blog or email list. And you can also translate that into social media influence if you’d like.

24. Learn New Things Constantly
Blogging will teach you all kinds of new skills, and you’ll never stop learning. It honestly goes so much further than just writing blog posts.
You might also find yourself becoming a better photographer and photo editor, graphic designer, social media manager, SEO expert, and much more.
25. Have Fun!
Finally, starting a blog is honestly a lot of fun! I wouldn’t have stuck with it for this long if it felt like a chore. I love that it hardly ever feels like “work” to me.
Whether you want to blog just as a hobby or to make money, it can be very fun.
